Report - Mauricio "Shogun" Rua To Be First Title Defense For Lyoto Machida
Report - Mauricio "Shogun" Rua To Be First Title Defense For Lyoto MachidaReports are circulating that it won’t be Quinton “Rampage” Jackson taking on Lyoto Machida for the Dragon’s first Light Heavyweight title defense. Various sources indicate that it will be none other than Mauricio “Shogun” Rua who will be the first to attempt to solve the champion’s elusive style in October at UFC 103.

It was previously announced by Rampage Jackson on his twitter account that he will indeed be coaching on the The Ultimate Fighter for the second time around. His opposing coach will be the former light heavyweight champion Rashard Evans, who is the man Lyoto beat for the title. It looks like Rampage is opting to settle the grudge with Evans which began during their war of words following Rampage’s UFC 96 win over Evan’s teammate Keith Jardine as opposed to going after the title immediately.

As for Shogun Rua, the former consensus #1 light heavyweight has been meeting with UFC officials in Las Vegas to work out a contract extension. Rua is coming off a very strong KO performance over Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell and has previously knocked out Mark Coleman. It looks like Shogun is finally back to form after debuting in the UFC with a loss to Forrest Griffin after a year-long layoff. As casual observers can see In the recent DREAM upset loss by Kid Yamamoto, coming back from a long layoff can have a huge negative effect on fighters. Perhaps Rua has finally shaken off the ring rust and wants to prove it against an extremely-hyped, and undefeated, Lyoto Machida.
