Lyoto Machida Sidelined Until January After Hand Surgery
Lyoto Machida Sidelined Until January After Hand Surgery UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida recently went under the knife according to his manager Ed Soares. “He had surgery [last Friday] on his left hand,” Soares told MMAJunkie. Machida most recently defended his title at UFC 104 against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.

The surgery was called a “complete success” as Machida and company expect to be back training sometime in January.

Prior to his UFC 104 bout, Machida said that he was completely healthy during his preparations for the October 24th showdown, but apparently that wasn’t the case.

“He just roughed it through this training camp. The hand has been bothering him for quite a while now. It was one of those situations. He just roughed through it,” said Soares.

UFC president Dana White has already confirmed that Machida’s next fight will be a rematch against Shogun on the heels of their highly controversial bout, which saw Machida take home a unanimous decision.

Early rumors had the mulligan possibly taking place at UFC 108 on January 2nd, but with the champion’s recent surgery, the earliest the bout could go down is either late February or early March, barring any further complications.
