Phil Baroni vs. Joe Riggs

Both fighters elected not to touch gloves before the fight. From the comments both men have made here on FightLine.com this past week, I'm not surprised.

Round 1: Riggs took Baroni down early and got Baroni's back. He attempted a rear-naked choke, but Baroni was able to squirm out. Riggs maintained control on top, landing shots and moving in and out of side control. Baroni briefly got up to his feet, only to be taken back down. Baroni was finally able to get on top and land some punches to the body with less than two minutes left. With less than a minute, referee John McCarthy stood them up, but Riggs quickly went for a take down. Baroni was able to get the better on the ground and landed some shots to finish the round. 10 - 9 Riggs.

Round 2: Both men exchanged early. Baroni got a takedown, but they were quickly back to their feet and Riggs got the better of the stand up. Baroni looks tired. Riggs nailed Baroni with a big knee and a straight punch. Both men went for a single leg, but both of their attempts were stuffed. They sprawled to the mat, with Riggs pulling Baroni into his guard. Riggs went for the traingle and Baroni was able to pull his head out and get out with less than a minute left. Baroni landed some more shots as the round came to a close. Another 10-9 round for Riggs.

Round 3: Both fighters touched gloves to start the round. Riggs nailed Baroni with a flying knee and kicks and rocked him again. Riggs nailed another flying right knee. Riggs continued to rock Baroni with jabs and kicks. Baroni is looking exhausted now. Riggs hit another knee, followed by a left hand. Baroni went for a kick, and Riggs told Baroni to bring it. Riggs is dominating this round with a minute left. Riggs kept nailing Baroni with knees, punches and elbows but Baroni stayed standing, showing his great chin. Baroni swung wildly and was taken down as the round came to a close. 10-9 round for Riggs.

Winner via unanimous decision (scores of 30-27): Joe Riggs

After the fight, Riggs said that he had broken both of his hands and that he had a bad flu. He then went on to say that he wants Jake Shields next, but wouldn't disrespect him and just said that he was a great fighter.
